Of course, I was not the first to suggest that an essentially spiritual approach, combined with modern scientific data - the best way successful problem solving of bad habits. I have already spoken of my appreciation for the twelve-step programs created by Alcoholics Anonymous and other organizations. Now, in conclusion, I want to offer my own twelve steps to get rid of bad habits and find true happiness in life.

In the first part, I made a distinction between joy and happiness. I have defined joy as a feeling arising from external experiences, such as finding money by chance, while happiness, by its very nature, comes from within a person. Happiness is a return to the deep harmony of body, mind and spirit - the harmony that was yours at birth and can be found again. Having restored it, a person will no longer feel the need for stimulants, depressants and all that needs to be bought, hidden, stabbed, inhaled, turned on and off.

None of this was necessary for you in childhood, when one sunny day and the love of loved ones was enough to overwhelm you with happiness. This openness to love, this ability to connect with the outside world is still with you. If you have been addicted for some time, it may seem to you that it is impossible to return to your old self. But it is possible. If you part with guilt and remorse and fill your life with happy experiences, then this is, in fact, inevitable. The tips below are designed to help you with this.

2. Do you start your day with activities that strengthen your body and spirit? The first hours after waking up determine the state of your consciousness throughout the day. Try to wake up without an alarm whenever possible. But if you still need it, use a timer radio tuned to soothing music in this capacity. Do not try at all costs to start the morning by listening to the news or watching TV. Very often they carry negative information that can unsettle you from the very beginning. Ayurveda teaches that breakfast should be light. However, if you really like to eat a hearty breakfast, it is better to do so than to start the day with painful abstinence. Early morning is undoubtedly the ideal time to meditate, and if it becomes a part of your life, you will naturally prefer a light breakfast.

3. Do you enjoy your work? Insufficient self-realization at work is one of the most frequently cited causes of depression, which gives rise to addictive behavior. If you consider your work to be worthless, it is unlikely that receiving any material benefits will be able to compensate for the damage that this causes to your overall attitude towards life. It is said that a genius is one who has been able to think of an occupation for himself, and there is no doubt that a job should provide a person with an opportunity for creativity and growth. Even if you can't make a career change right now, take a look at the areas outside of your current job that you could dedicate your extra time to. I am glad that I was able to do this in relation to writing, despite the fact that for many years my entire working day was occupied by medical practice.

4. When you get angry with someone or something, could you find a constructive outlet for your feelings? Explosive and emotional manifestation of anger is often harmful, but it is equally wrong to simply hold it in and allow destructive feelings to torment you from the inside. According to Ayurveda, anger should be "digested" in the same way as everything that enters the body. A key factor in this process is the realization that it is not someone else's words and actions that give rise to anger, but you yourself. Whatever happens, the choice of reaction is yours. By learning to make these choices, you will be able to completely process anger, just as your body processes food and drink. Once you have this emotional digestion, you will be able to express your feelings to other people without hurting yourself or them.

5. Have you managed to perceive nature consciously and gratefully today? Ayurveda teaches that there is a universal life force, called in Sanskrit prana, in which all living beings draw energy. One source of prana is healthy food. However, this is by no means the only and by no means its main source. Even if you live in a city, you can keep your connection with nature by touching flowers and trees, taking time to walk in the park or by the lake, or even just being outside every day. Just planting a seed in a pot, carefully watering it and lovingly watching how a flower grows from it, you can get the richest experience of communication with nature. The degree of intelligence and awareness you give to this prana-enriching activity is truly more important than the activity itself.

Many studies over the past twenty years have shown that a certain kind of hormone called endorphins can have a very beneficial effect on the physical and emotional sphere of a person. Physical exercise is one of the most effective ways prompting the brain to release endorphins. This explains the “muscle joy” well-known to athletes. You, however, do not need to resort to grueling workouts for this. Yogic postures, described in chapter 11, are able to activate the energy centers of the body, called marmas in Ayurveda. These points serve as the basis for stimulating your inner energy. Also, keep in mind that Yoga does not require as much time and money as other types of training. Even if you devote only a few minutes a day to these activities, Yoga will have a tangible positive effect on you, similar to the effect of meditation, while strengthening your body. Improving your fitness will make you less prone to self-destructive activities.

7. Have you managed to spend at least some time in silence and solitude? Modern life is full of all sorts of "noises" which can greatly contribute to nervous imbalance. The antidote here is the ability to retreat into silence and enjoy it. Accessing the gaps of silence between your thoughts is precisely the goal of Ayurvedic meditation. What little self-discipline that meditation requires will be rewarded a hundredfold with a rich experience of calm alertness - an experience that is soothing and at the same time, paradoxically, stimulating. I am convinced that meditation is the only effective way in all respects to get rid of bad habits of any kind.

8. Have you ever laughed with pleasure today? Laughter, like speech, has many varieties. Due to stress and irritation, people forget what a happy laugh is. Much of today's humor is based on embarrassment or watching someone fail. Heartless laughter does nothing but harm; laughter, filled with warmth and happiness, has truly magical ability alleviate both emotional and physical pain. Try to think of something that has ever made you really have a hearty laugh. You may even enjoy writing down these incidents. Which of them, for example, amused you the most? These are very precious moments, and you should allow yourself to think about them whenever you are overwhelmed with negative feelings. Truly, laughter can become that healing addiction that will overcome the craving for harmful addictions.

9. Have you been able to get some rest after feeling tired or stressed out?

Many people feel as if they have never had free time, although, of course, none of us has more time than a neighbor. When eliminating Vata imbalance, which is usually caused by bad habits, give credit to your need for rest, even when it seems completely impossible.

Ayurveda teaches that there is a time of day naturally reserved for relaxation. During these hours - from six to ten both in the morning and in the evening - Kapha, the most calm and stable of the doshas, ​​dominates.

If possible, spend these hours in peace and quiet. Kapha periods are ideal for meditation. However, even after meditation, it is extremely useful to keep calm in these morning and evening hours. The world will not collapse if you don't worry about it for a while. It will likely even lead to the rest of your day going much more smoothly.

10. Were the surroundings and company pleasant enough for you when you ate? According to Ayurveda, the food itself is not as important as the emotions that accompany it. Even the feelings experienced by those who prepared this food are important. Although we have been brought up with the idea of ​​"fast food", the ability to truly enjoy food has key value in terms of true enjoyment of life. And until you learn to truly enjoy life, you will be a potential victim of bad habits and other unhealthy behaviors. Try to eat at least once a day in a really pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. According to Ayurveda, it is better for this to happen at noon.

11. Have you shown love for your friends and family today? Love can be shown in many ways. A person perceives affection best through touch, and physical contact is a truly wonderful way to express love. A huge number of ways to express affection also include a conversation, a joint meal, an evening walk, listening to music with those people who care about you, but in the turmoil of today's life it is so easy to forget about all this. Love cannot be planned in the same way that you put aside everything and set aside time for meditation. But you can deliberately be aware of your love for those close to you and find ways to freely and joyfully express these feelings at any time. There is nothing more healthy and important in life.

Once you realize that you are loved by many people, that your very existence is a manifestation of love, you will lose the need for addictions. Love is the greatest treasure. Nothing that causes addiction, can not be compared with it in strength.
