What prayers to read for the departed

The death of a person is a tragedy for his family and friends. Sometimes it seems that the deceased can no longer be helped, except for a funeral, a commemoration, a monument on the grave and good memory of other people. But actually it is not.

Since ancient times, Christians have spoken about the importance of prayer for the dead. It can be short and in your own words, it can be silent when a person cannot speak because of his grief, but it can also be long.
Many holy fathers themselves composed prayers for the departed. According to legend, the first example of a permissive prayer, which is placed in the hand of the deceased, was written by the Monk Theodosius of the Caves in the second half of the 11th century at the request of one of the Kyiv princes.

Even earlier, in the 8th century, the famous theologian and defender of holy icons, the Monk John of Damascus, in memory of his deceased friend, composed 13 funeral stichera, which can still be heard at the funeral service. However, the Church takes care of a person even at the most tragic moment of his life, when the soul is separated from the body - for this there is a special prayer for people who are in a long and painful agony.
As soon as a Christian has died, one can read the canon about the one who died and the Psalter with intensified prayers for the soul of the newly deceased about his soul, and then for the last time the person is brought to the temple for the funeral.
Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said remarkably about the love of the Church for the human body, which manifests itself during the funeral service: “We find this love, this care, this reverent attitude towards the body in Orthodoxy; and this is reflected in an amazing way in the funeral service. We surround this body with love and attention; this body is the center of the funeral service for the deceased; not only the soul, but also the body. And indeed, if you think about it: after all, there is nothing in human experience, not only earthly, but also heavenly, that would not reach us through our body.
According to the teachings of the Church, it is very important to pray for the newly-departed (recently deceased person) in the first forty days from the moment of death, since at this time the soul of a person goes to the Last Judgment either in heaven or in hell, but the dead need prayers after this period. After death, a Christian cannot alleviate his fate on his own, but the prayers of loved ones, commemoration at the liturgy and distribution of alms with a request to remember a person can change the fate of a person at the Last Judgment. Once, a monk was buried in the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery, who had many unconfessed sins. Other monks, together with the abbot, saw at night how their negligent brother was tormented in hell. The astonished monks began to pray for the sinner, and in new visions the brother's face became brighter and more peaceful. In the end, Christ forgave the sins of this man, and he went to heaven.
There are many ways to pray for the dead: you can submit a note for a proskomedia for commemoration at the liturgy, order a memorial service or a short litia, or you can pray at home.

Kondak 1
Chosen Intercessor and High Priest, for the salvation of the sinful world, laying down His soul, giving us the power to be the children of God and dwell in the non-evening days of Your Kingdom! Grant forgiveness and eternal joy to the deceased;
Ikos 1
Holy guardian angel given by the Lord, come and pray for your servant, whom you accompanied, guarded and instructed on all paths of life, call with us to the All-Generous Savior: Jesus, destroy the handwriting of the sins of Your servant (name). Jesus, heal his spiritual sores. Jesus, may there be no bitter memories of him on earth. Jesus, for this reason have mercy on those who grieve him and are offended by him. Jesus, cover his imperfections with the luminous garment of Your redemption. Jesus, rejoice him with Thy mercy. Jesus, the Ineffable, the Great and the Wonderful, appear to him Himself. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 2
Like an inconsolable dove, the soul hovers over the earthly vale, contemplating from the height of Divine understanding the sins and temptations of the past path, bitterly grieving for each irrevocable day that has gone useless, but have mercy on Your servant, Master, that he may enter into Your rest, crying out: Alleluia.
Ikos 2
If you also suffered for the whole world, if you also shed tears and bloody sweat for the living and the dead, who will keep us from praying for the deceased? Imitating You, who descended even to hell, we pray for the salvation of Your servant: Jesus, Giver of life, illumine him with Your light. Jesus, may he be one with Thee and the Father [and the Spirit]. Jesus, call everyone to Your vineyard, do not forget to illuminate it with Your light. Jesus, bountiful Distributor of eternal rewards, make him the son of Your palace. Jesus, restore to his soul the grace-filled strength of primordial purity. Jesus, may good works be multiplied in his name. Jesus, warm the orphan with Your mysterious joy. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 3
Bound by the fetters of the flesh, Thy servant fell sinfully, both his spirit languished for Thy eternal truth and holiness, now, when the infirmity of the flesh is bound by grave corruption, may his soul ascend above the sun to Thee, the All-Holy One, and sing the song of deliverance: Alleluia.
Ikos 3
Your Supreme Apostle, on a cold night by the fire, denied eating from You three times, and You saved him. The only knowledge of human nature is infirmity, forgive and Thy servant (name) many-sided falling away from Thy will. Jesus, instill it there, where there is no error. Jesus, deliver him from the painful torments of conscience. Jesus, may the memory of his sins perish forever. Jesus, remember not the temptations of his youth. Jesus, cleanse him from secret iniquities. Jesus, overshadow him with the quiet light of salvation. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 4
The storms of life have passed, earthly suffering is over, powerless to fight their malice, but love is strong, delivering from eternal darkness and saving everyone for whom the bold song is lifted up to You: Alleluia.
Ikos 4
Thou art without number merciful to us. You are the only Redeemer, what shall we add to the achievement of Your saving love? However, as Simon of Cyrene helped to carry the Cross to You, the Almighty, so even now Your goodness is pleasing to the salvation of loved ones with our participation. Jesus, you have commanded that you bear one another's burdens. Jesus, Thou art also merciful to us after death. Jesus, an alliance of love between the dead and the living. Jesus, may the labors of those who love serve for the salvation of Your servant (name). Jesus, hear his cry of the heart, lifted up by our lips. Jesus, in our tears receive his repentance. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 5
God, may his dying sigh of contrition be accepted by You, like the prayer of a prudent thief. He died on the cross of life, let him inherit Your promises, like this: “Amen, I say to you, now you will be with Me in paradise”, where the hosts of repentant sinners joyfully sing: Alleluia.
Ikos 5
Crucified for us, tormented for us, stretch out your hand from Your Cross, washed with drops of Your blood without a trace of the poured out of his sins, warm your naked orphaned soul with Your good-looking nakedness. Jesus, you knew his life before birth and loved him. Jesus, You saw him from afar from the height of Your Cross. Jesus, Thou hast extended unto him, into the distance to come, Thy wounded embrace. Jesus, you cried out for his forgiveness on the bloody Golgotha. Jesus, you meekly died for him in severe torment. Jesus, enduring the situation in the tomb, sanctify his grave rest. Risen Jesus, lift up to the Father the soul embittered by the world and saved by You. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 6
He sleeps in the eternal sleep of the grave, both of which his soul does not sleep, waits for You, Lord, longs for You, the eternal Bridegroom. May Your words be fulfilled on the dead: “He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood, have eternal life.” Give him food from the hidden manna and sing at Your Throne: Alleluia.
Ikos 6
Death has separated from all neighbors: the soul has given up, the knowledge is distressed, and only You alone remained close. The barriers of the flesh were destroyed, and You were revealed in the impregnable majesty of the Divine with the expectation of an answer. Jesus, love beyond all understanding, have mercy on your servant. Jesus, moving away from You, he is suffering grievously. Jesus, forgive the unfaithfulness of his heart. Jesus, deceived hopes gave rise to longing for You. Jesus, remember those hours when his soul trembles with Your delight. Jesus, give unearthly joy and peace to the deceased. Jesus, the only faithful, unchanging, accept him. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 7
We believe that our separation will not be long. We bury you, like a grain in the field, you imashi grow in another country. May the tares of your sins perish in the grave, and good deeds shine there, where the seeds of goodness bear imperishable fruit, where the holy souls sing: Alleluia.
Ikos 7
When oblivion becomes the lot of the deceased, when his image fades in the hearts and time will erase, along with the grave, the zeal of prayer for him, and then you do not leave him, give joy to a lonely soul. Jesus, Your love does not grow cold. Jesus, Thy good pleasure is inexhaustible. Jesus, in unceasing supplications to the Church, may his sins be washed away by the offering of the Bloodless Sacrifice. Jesus, through the intercession of all the saints, grant him the grace of prayer for the living. Jesus, in the days of our trials, accept his intercession for us. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 8
Imams pray with tears, when the memory of the deceased is painfully fresh, imams remember his name night and day, distributing alms, feeding the smooth, crying out from the depths of the soul: Alleluia.
Ikos 8
The seer John the Theologian contemplates at the Throne of the Lamb of God a great multitude of people clothed in white robes: nets that came from great sorrow. They joyfully serve God day and night, and God dwells with them, and torment will not touch them. Jesus, count among them your servant (name). Jesus, he suffers and languishes a lot. Jesus, all the bitter hours and painful minutes of it are known to You. Jesus, on earth he has more sorrow and sorrow, give him joy in heaven. Jesus, sweeten him from the springs of living water. Jesus, take away every tear from his eyes. Jesus, fill it up, where it does not scorch, but the sun of Thy righteousness lives. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 9
The earthly wandering is over, the blessed transition to the world of the Spirit, some contemplation of new things unknown to the earthly world and heavenly beauties, the soul returns to its Fatherland, where the bright sun, the truth of God enlightens those who sing: Alleluia.
Ikos 9
If your reflection and trace puts a radiance on the face of mortals, what kind of Thou art thou?! If the fruits of Your hands are so beautiful, and the earth, reflecting only Your shadow, is full of inexpressible greatness, what is Your invisible Face?! Reveal Your glory to Your deceased servant (name). Jesus, sharpen his hearing to perceive Your Divinity. Jesus, sharpen his mind to the understanding of heavenly things. Jesus, may his joy be overflowing. Jesus, strengthen him with the hope of meeting in the abodes of the blessed. Jesus, let us feel the grace-filled power of the prayer for the dead. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 10
Our Father, who died in Your Kingdom, accept, where there is no sin and evil, where the Holy Will is indestructible, where in the hosts of the purest souls and immaculate Angels Your grace-filled name is hallowed and praise is fragrant: Alleluia.
Ikos 10
On that day, the Angels will establish Your Throne, Judge, and You will shine in the glory of Your Father, bringing recompense to every person. Oh, then look graciously at Your humble servant (name), tell him: "Come at the right hand of Me." Jesus, as God has the power to forgive sins. Jesus, forgive his sins forgotten or hidden by shame. Jesus, let go of the iniquities of weakness and ignorance. Jesus, deliver him from the unholy depths of hellish despair. Jesus, may he inherit Your life-giving promises. Jesus, reckon him blessed by your Father. Jesus, give him everlasting bliss. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 11
Omnipotent Lord, may the sun-shaped gates of paradise be opened to the deceased, may the cathedrals of the righteous and saints, the hosts of those close to him and those who loved him, greet him with jubilation, may Thy luminous Angels rejoice over him, may he see Your Blessed Mother there, where victoriously sounds: Alleluia.
Ikos 11
Under Your breath flowers come to life, nature is resurrected, hosts of the smallest creatures awaken, Your gaze is brighter than spring skies, Your love, Jesus, is warmer than the rays of the sun. You resurrected the mortal human flesh from the dust of the earth to the flowering of the eternal imperishable life of spring, then illumine Your servant (name) with the light of Your mercy. Jesus, in Your right hand is goodwill and life. Jesus, there is light and love in Your sight. Jesus, deliver the departed from eternal spiritual death. Jesus, I will sleep with hope, like the Nile river before a cold winter. Jesus, awaken him when the thorns of the earth are clothed with the color of eternity. Jesus, let nothing earthly darken his last sleep. Jesus, Unchanging Happiness and the purpose of our existence. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 12
Christ! You are the Kingdom of Heaven, You are the land of the meek, You are the abode of many, You are a perfect new drink, You are the robe and crown of the saints, You are the resting place of the saints, You are the Sweetest Jesus! Praise befits you: Alleluia.
Ikos 12
Under the image of quiet gardens of unearthly beauty and bright, like the sun, cloisters and in the splendor of heavenly hymns, Thou hast revealed to us the bliss of those who love Thee. Jesus, let Your servant enter into Your joy. Jesus, clothe him with the radiance of the glory of the Father. Jesus, sanctify it with the illumination of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, let him hear the inexpressible song of the Cherubim. Jesus, may he ascend from glory to glory. Jesus, may he see You face to face. Jesus, the All-Merciful Judge, vouchsafe paradise to Thy servant.
Kondak 13
O Zhenishe the Immortal, at midnight of sin and unbelief, coming from heaven with Angels to judge the world around! Open the doors of Your glorious chamber to Your servant (name), and in countless hosts of saints forever sing: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

From the aftermath of the memorial service

Troparion tone 8
With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it useful to everyone, the One Sodetel, rest, O Lord, the soul of Thy servant (or: the soul of Thy servant; about many: the souls of Thy servant), put hope on Thee (or about many: lay down), the Creator and the Builder and our God. Glory, and now: To you and the Wall and the Refuge of the Imam, and the Prayer Book is favorable to God, You gave birth to him, O Brideless Mother of God, the faithful salvation

Prayer

God of spirits and all flesh, righting death and abolishing the devil, and bestowing life on Your world! Himself, Lord, give rest to the souls of the departed Thy servants: His Holiness Patriarchs, His Grace Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops, who served You in the priestly, church and monastic ranks; the creators of this holy temple, Orthodox forefathers, father, brothers and sisters, lying here and everywhere; leaders and warriors for faith and the fatherland laid down their lives, faithful, killed in internecine warfare, drowned, burned, frozen in the scum, torn to pieces by beasts, suddenly died without repentance and did not have time to reconcile with the Church and with their enemies; in the frenzy of the mind of the suicidal, those whom we commanded and asked to pray for, for whom there is no one to pray for, and the faithful, the burials of the Christian deprived (the name of the rivers) in a place of light, in a place of greenery, in a place of peace, sickness, sadness and sighing will flee from here . Any sin committed by them in word or deed or thought, like a good God who loves mankind, forgive, like a person, who will be alive and will not sin. Thou art only one except for sin, Thy righteousness is righteousness forever, and Thy word is truth.

Prayers for a dead child

Prayer for the Lost Daughter

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Master of life and death, Comforter of those who mourn! With a contrite and touched heart, I resort to You and pray to You: remember. Lord, in your Kingdom, your deceased servant, my child (name), and create eternal memory for her. You, Lord of life and death, have given me this child. Thy good and wise will was pleased to take it away from me. Blessed be thy name, Lord. I pray to Thee, Judge of heaven and earth, with Thy infinite love for us sinners, forgive my departed child all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word, even in deed, even in knowledge and ignorance. Forgive, Merciful, and our parental sins, may they not abide on our children: we know, as if we have sinned against Thee by a multitude, we have not kept a multitude, we have not created, as thou hast commanded us. But if our deceased child, ours or his own for the sake of guilt, was in this life, working for the world and his flesh, and not more than You, the Lord and your God: if you love the delights of this world, and not more than Your Word and Your commandments, if you betrayed sweetness of life, and not more than repentance of our sins, and in intemperance I betrayed vigil, fasting and prayer to oblivion - I pray you earnestly, forgive me, O good Father, my child, all such sins of his, forgive and weaken, if you do something else evil in this life . Christ Jesus! You resurrected the daughter of Jairus by the faith and prayer of her father. You healed the daughter of a Canaanite wife by faith and the petition of her mother: hear my prayer, and do not despise my prayer for my child. Forgive me, Lord, forgive all his sins and, having forgiven and cleansed his soul, take away eternal torment and instill with all Your saints who have pleased You from time immemorial, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life: as if there is a person who He will live and will not sin, but Thou art the only one except for all sin: yes, whenever you have to judge the world, my child will hear Your most exalted voice: come, blessed of My Father, and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Like you are the Father of mercies and bounty. You are our life and resurrection, and we send glory to You with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the dead son

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Master of life and death, Comforter of those who mourn! With a contrite and touched heart, I resort to You and pray to You: remember. Thy good and wise will was pleased to take it away from me. Blessed be thy name, Lord. Prayers for the deceased husband

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! You are crying consolation, orphans and widows intercession. Thou didst say: Call upon Me in the day of thy affliction, and I will destroy thee. In the days of my sorrow, I resort to You and pray to You: do not turn Your face away from me and hear my prayer, brought to You with tears. You, Lord, Lord of all, deigned to combine me with one of Your servants, in which we should have one body and one spirit; You gave me this servant, as a partner and protector. Thy good and wise will deigned to take this Thy servant away from me and leave me alone. I bow before this Thy will and resort to Thee in the days of my sorrow: quench my sorrow about being separated from Thy servant, my friend. If you took him away from me, not taken from me by Your mercy. As if you once took two mites to the widow, so accept this prayer of mine. Remember, Lord, the soul of your deceased servant (name), forgive him all his sins, free and involuntary, if in word, if in deed, if in knowledge and ignorance, do not destroy him with his iniquities and do not betray him to eternal torment, but by Your great mercy and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, weaken and forgive all his sins and commit him with Thy saints, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life. I pray and ask Thee, Lord, grant me all the days of my life not to stop praying for Your departed servant, and even before my departure, ask You, the Judge of the whole world, to leave all his sins and move him into Heavenly abodes, even if you have prepared for those who love Tya. Like if you sin, but do not depart from You, and undoubtedly the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are Orthodox even to the last breath of confession; the same, his faith, even in Thee, instead of deeds, he is imputed: like a person to bear, who will live and not sin, You are one except for sin, and Your truth is truth forever. I believe, Lord, and I confess that You hear my prayer and do not turn Your face away from me. Seeing the widow, weeping greenery, having mercy, her son, to the burial of the bear, resurrected you: so having mercy, calm my sorrow. As if you opened the doors of Your mercy to Your servant Theophilus, who departed to You, and forgave him his sins through the prayers of Your Holy Church, listening to the prayers and alms of his wife: I pray to You, accept my prayer for Your servant and bring him into eternal life. Like you are our hope. You are God, to have mercy and save, and we send glory to You with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayers for the deceased wife

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! In contrition and tenderness of my heart, I pray to You: God rest the soul of Your deceased servant (name), in Your Heavenly Kingdom. Lord Almighty! You have blessed the matrimonial union of husband and wife, when you said: it is not good to be a single man, we will make him an assistant for him. You sanctified this union in the image of the spiritual union of Christ with the Church. I believe, Lord, and I confess that you have blessed you to combine and me with this holy union with one of Your servants. Thy good and wise will deigned to take away from me this Thy servant, and gave it to me, as a helper and companion of my life. I bow before this Thy will, and I pray to Thee with all my heart, accept this prayer for Thy servant (name), and forgive her, if you sin in word, deed, thought, knowledge and ignorance; love the earthly more than the heavenly; more about the clothes and adornment of his body, he cares more than about the enlightenment of the clothes of his soul; or even more carelessly about your children; if you grieve someone by word or deed; if you scold your neighbor in your heart, or condemn someone or something else from such evil deeds. Forgive her all this, as good and philanthropic: as if there is a person who will live and not sin. Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, as Your creation, do not condemn me by her sin to eternal torment, but have mercy and mercy according to Your great mercy. I pray and ask Thee, Lord, grant me strength for all the days of my life, without ceasing to pray for the departed Thy servant, and even before the death of my belly, ask her from Thee, the Judge of the whole world, for the remission of her sins. Yes, as you, O God, put on her head a crown from an honest stone, crowning her here on earth; so crown me with Your eternal glory in Your Heavenly Kingdom, with all the saints rejoicing there, and together with them forever sing Your all-holy name with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Psalm 90
Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the God of Heaven will settle. The Lord says: Thou art my intercessor, and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. As if He will deliver thee from the snares of the net and from the rebellious word, His splash will overshadow thee, and under His wings you hope: His truth will be your weapon. Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the thing in the darkness of the transient, from the scum and the demon of the noonday. A thousand will fall from your country, and the darkness at your right hand will not come close to you: both look at your eyes, and see the reward of sinners. As you, O Lord, are my hope, the Most High have laid down your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not come near your body. Like an angel to command you about you, keep you in all your ways. They will take you in their hands, but not when you stomp your foot on a stone. Step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and, as if I knew my name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in affliction, I will crush him, and I will glorify him; I will fulfill him with length of days, and I will show him my salvation.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.
